| How the Wood Carver came to Eppstein-Vockenhausen in 1930 |

After
completing his training as a wood carver in Dessau in 1920, Josef
Zimmermann worked in a variety of towns, in order to broaden his
knowledge. In 1930 he founded Zimmermann Wood Carving Workshop, at Hauptstrasse 66 in Vockenhausen. In the first years of his independent work as a wood carver, he created a large number of altars and patron saints for churches and cloisters, a number of which can still be seen in the Frankfurt Liebfrauen Church. In the aftermath of the Second World War orders poured in for the restoration of valuable carvings destroyed during the war. He also cut crosses and memorial plaques commemorating fallen soldiers on behalf of clubs and other institutions. Last but not least came furniture carving, with elaborate decorated cupboards and chests. |

I was born in
1945 as the third son of the wood carver Josef Zimmermann. My childhood
playground was the wood carving workshop, and for my 10th
birthday I received my first wood carving knife set. I immediately set
to work to learn my father’s trade. My spare time was usually spent in the workshop, carving small presents for friends and acquaintances. But I was not satisfied with amateur woodworking and soon enrolled in woodworking courses in Oberammergau and Südtirol, studying with well-known wood carvers, who also taught me polychrome painting and the most modern techniques of surface treatment for statues. The results appealed to collectors and admirers of wood carving within a wider region, which led me to continue, and for the last 20 years I have committed myself to continuing the family tradition of wood carving. |
